April Book Discussion PDF Print E-mail

BOOK CLUB on Tuesday, April 24th:

Liz Murray is the author of “Breaking Night.”   It’s a Resurrection story: a memoir of forgiveness, survival and her journey from

homelessness to Harvard.  Far from some maudlin sob story about a hard knock life, the author relays her story simply and

effectively.  She talks about the practical implications of being raised by junkies and having to rely on the kindness of friends

to meet her basic needs.  Liz was often hungry.  Her clothing was filthy and raggedy and the kids at school made fun of her

because of it. Liz realized that there would be a point when people tired of helping her and started thinking about her

future….”Breaking Night” is urban slang for: staying up through the night, until the sun rises.

The New York Times Review said “it’s a white knuckle account of survival….her stoicism has been hard-earned; it is

full of heart, without a sliver of ice, and deeply moving.”

ALL are welcome to this gathering: TUESDAY, APRIL 24TH at 7 pm in the lower level of Holy Cross Church.

February Book Club: Our selection for this month is a non fiction book written by Diane Brady titled "Fraternity". In these pages the author has followed five African American men through their years at Holy Cross College in Massachusetts. "Not only did the future president of the college, Rev. John Brooks, convince these young men to attend the school, he also obtained full scholarships to support them, and then mentored, defended, coached and befriended them through an often challenging four years." All of this took place during the sixties, a time of racial turmoil. We promise an evening of interesting discussion and at least some liquid refreshment. 7:00PM in the lower level on Tuesday February 28th.

The Great Adventure

Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom
by Jeff Cavins

Step Three in The Great Adventure Bible Study Program, Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom, builds on The Bible Timeline and Matthew by showing how Christís Kingdom on earth is empowered to carry out his work in the world. The book of Acts shows the Church, enlivened by the Holy Spirit, teaching, preaching, healing, and restoring outcasts in the same way that Jesus did on earth.

The Acts of the Apostles provides an historic framework for understanding the rest of the New Testament. Paul's letters in particular come alive in a new way when they are read within the context of the Acts narrative.

Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom has been granted the Imprimatur by Justin Cardinal Rigali, Archbishop of Philadelphia.

You Will:

  • See how the Gospel witness spread outward in waves, from Jerusalem to Judea and Samaria, and finally to the ends of the earth.
  • Share with the early Christians the joys and struggles of living the life of Christ, and learn how these apply to us today.
  • See how the Holy Spirit guided the apostles into Truth.
  • Observe the way the Spirit-filled Church adapted to new cultures when proclaiming the Gospel.
  • Watch the seeds of Church structure and authority take root,  and see how conflicts were resolved even at that early stage.
  • See your place in Christ’s Church, and how you should live day-to-day as a disciple of Christ.
